ADOPTABLE DELILAH!

Oh, Delilah! The honourary Boston Terrier.

What a transformation! From a quiet, withdrawn, slightly nervous, very underweight and malnourished dog that didn’t know what toys were or how to play and thought every meal was her last – to a boisterous, happy, healthy, lovable, playful, character!

Delilah still loves her food, A LOT, but has learned to take treats gently (most of the time) and to wait calmly for her meals. Estimated at 6-8 years old, she currently weighs 36 pounds. Though Delilah’s teeth are worn, it doesn’t slow her down in any way, including eating!

Once too weak to travel far, Delilah’s short ‘strolls’ have turned into walks which she loves and waits for each day. She’s a bit of a Nosey Parker, though, so when anyone or any dog is near, she needs to say ‘hello’!

Delilah loves snuggles. She just loves love, period. Great with children, she is gentle with the little ones, knowing not to jump up, but always ready to give kisses.

Delilah does have some eye issues common to English Bulldogs, including KCS (low tear production), and a prolapsed third eyelid. Treatment will be lifelong, and she will need regular veterinary eye checks. Currently, her eye meds cost approximately $120/monthly. Although eye drops are not her favourite thing, she always comes when it’s time and is very cooperative. A little kibble after each eye medication helps to keep her motivated. 😉

Delilah enjoys the company of other CALM dogs and slow introductions are best. She gets along well with her large foster brother, who is a patient and sturdy Northern Manitoba rescue. After her spay, they have played every day, but Delilah still learning her manners. She gets along best with dogs that can handle her ‘less than techniqued’ forms of play as it seems she hasn’t had that much practice! As for cats, well, that depends much on the cat. She has been known to chase!

Delilah is mostly housetrained although she has had the occasional pee accident so regular trips outdoors is a good idea.

The crate used to be a safe place for Delilah, and it’s suspected she spent a lot of time there in her past life. Although she is good in her crate, she has started to show some disinterest in going in as she feels safe in her foster home and no longer needs the protection that her crate used to provide. Still, she seems happy to go in at night and often puts herself to bed if she’s tired.

If we had to list her favourite things, they would be as follows: food (definitely #1) then snuggles…with a blanket…on a couch (furniture is a bit of a new concept, so there have been a few less than ladylike tumbles off the edge, but what’s a little clumsiness around friends?). Speaking of which, friends are also at the top of Delilah’s list, as is giving kisses to said friends, sunbathing inside or out, walks, and making a mess on the floor after a drink.

Delilah will make a great addition to a loving family, perhaps with bulldog experience, who appreciates the commitment required to care for her eyes. A fenced yard would be ideal for quick outdoor access but is not a firm requirement.

If you’re the family Delilah is waiting for, please fill out an adoption application here!

Delilah July Update

We’re all about positive body image, but let’s face it – some of us still strive to get that perfect beach body. Delilah is no exception, but in her case, she needed to gain some weight to look her best. We think you’ll agree that she’s reached her goal!

Not only have her looks changed, but Delilah’s personality has blossomed as well. She is much more playful, and always up for belly rubs and affection. She had a great time on her cottage vacation, and while she’s not a Boston, she shares the same love of sunbathing!

Her recent spay revealed that she’s likely been bred many times, and her teeth, while worn, have been x-rayed and there is no further attention required at this time. With most of her medical needs now taken care of, Delilah will soon be ready to find a loving, forever family where she can continue to flourish and shine!

Delilah June Update

Delilah was DNA tested thanks to our friends at DNA My Dog, and it turns out that there is no Boston Terrier at all. She is a single breed English bulldog!

Our ‘honourary’ Boston Terrier was in pretty rough shape when she came to BTRC. But things are definitely getting better!

She continues to gain some much-needed weight, her ear infections have cleared up, and she is being treated for a urinary tract infection.

Delilah has seen the eye specialist, and was diagnosed with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), or dry eye. This is a chronic condition, and she will need medication life-long to stimulate tear production. She appears to be responding well to the prescribed treatment but will be rechecked to confirm that eye surgery isn’t in her future.

Pre-op testing, spay, dental assessment, and vaccine boosters are still to come. Delilah is another costly foster, but she is worth every penny! Her foster mom tells us that she is “such a sweetie. Loves being with her people. Loves her crate, kids, fooooood, the car, and her strolls. A lovely little lady.” ❤️

My, My, My, Delilah!

We asked our social media supporters for their help in choosing a name for this lovely girl – and the results of our poll are in. Presenting Delilah!

Now this sweet gal can learn to associate her new name with new beginnings and good things to come. ❤️

Welcome Miss ?

Our newest intake is a Boston/bulldog mix. We’re not sure of her age – her emaciated condition and eye issues make it hard to guesstimate – Is she six? Maybe older? In fact, we’re not sure of much as this girl came to us from a shelter after being found as a stray.

Here’s what we do know. She has the sweetest disposition ❤️. She is settling in well to her foster home (which has the bonus of a vet tech in the family). And, apparently, she’s a fan of TV, or of Tom Cruise, or maybe she just loves Jerry Maguire. (Geez… more questions 😂)
